Here's a picture of some pumpkins in my garden. Sometimes I plant corn and pumpkins for the sole purpose of producing this image. I like it as well as anything I ever get to look at.
Just put a green tomato pie in the oven. We saved a bunch of them from the frost last week. Now we have fewer of them sitting around AND two pies (one fresh in about an hour, and one frozen for Thanksgiving). that's a win/win in my book.
I'd like to know how to make a green tomatoe pie, I still got some of them. We did cook and store some pumpkin pie filling and it's great. I've used up or given away all but 6 pumpkins, I will bring them to the Happy Hour next week if anybody wants them.
Just "googled" it. Really easy--and super yummy! Took about five green tomatoes, peeled and sliced. I just used those pie crusts that come folded up in a box. If you don't see a recipe you like, I'll post the one I used.
4 cups peeled, sliced, green tomatoes (Sprinkle with one tablespoon of lemon juice and set aside.)
Mix together 1 1/4 cup brown sugar, 5 tablespoons of flour, 1/4 tsp salt, and a pinch of ground nutmeg.
Fold together the tomatoes and the other mixture, and pour into pastry-lined pie pan. Dot the top with two tablespoons of butter. Place the other pastry circle on top and crimp the sides to seal. Cut steam vents.
Bake at 450 for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 and bake an additional 25-30 minutes.
It's not my recipe, Kim got it from Food Network.com. However, after baking one, we think it would come out better if you slice the green tomatoes thin and let them drain for a little while before assembling. We found that just chopping the tomotoes resulted in way too much liquid pooling at the bottom of the crust. Anyway, knock yourselves out gang...

Saturday night. Used to be for major partying and such. Now I sit around and bake green tomato pies. Smells great, but I'm saving it for Thanksgiving. Hey, it's my first ever pie, and it is ugly. It better be good. Hey Tick, I have enough green tomatoes for another pie if you want them. Let me know and I will bring them to the Brick Monday.
The Green Tomato Pie was absolutely marvelous. Some of the relatives wouldn't touch it. It seems to be apple pie with green tomatoes replacing the apple. I will have to try the Ann Anonamus recipe next time. Jake and I smoked a big turkey, and my mother baked a big one and all the relatives bring something. I like the pies. My older sister makes pecan and it is too good. I will bet everybody has something special and tooooo good. Hey it's time to bust out the tree and the lights!
I think that a rhubarb and green tomato pie would be a marvelous combination. Peggy, I think that you live 4 or 5 hours away. I will give it due consideration. Hey Tick, I see that you are going to be in the December 14 show in Lawrence, The Holiday Hoedown. It should be real fun.
8 x 10 glossies sounds a little extravagent, maybe you could just send smaller prints of a couple of the more graceful poses. Or email. I plan to do something at the Dec. show, but right now my left knee is giving me some more grief, so may not be dancing.
I'm starting to think about next years garden, have been spading a 20 x 20 plot, applying wood ashes and a thick layer of leaves. Just for the hell of it, I'm going to see what I can do with a 400 sq. ft. area using no power tools, gasoline, or electricity.
I tried to send the pictures, but they're huge. Does one of you computer whizzes know how to shrink them? I can get in Adobe and work with them, but guess I don't know how to save what I've done.
Your garden idea sounds really optimistic--good luck!
Hey Tick, I hope that your knee is OK. 400 square feet sounds small, until you get after it with a shovel, rake and hoe. I made salsa with the last of the tomatoes. They had turned red a little quicker than I thought they would. It's good and hot. I hope that everybody is getting ready for Christmas, is mentally prepared, and having fun putting all the stuff out and shopping. Ann, I cannot help you with the pictures, computers make my head hurt.
Mr. Frazier was the MC at the Wilders Holiday Hoedown at Liberty Hall last night. I took a small recording device and the only really good sounding part is Dale's opening. After that the crowd noise and the vastness of the hall just muddied a wonderful show. I was kinds hoping the Tick would play a back in the hills Christmas song. I was glad to see your knee was well enough to get out there and swivel the hips and knock the knees a little.

A big old homemade pumpkin pie sounds mighty good about right now.

Nice pumpkins Tick...
Green tomato pie, sounds interesting. We always fried those green tomatoes. Sounds like a good change of pace, is the recipe available and easy?

I'd love the green tomato pie recipe, too!
We've just been stir-frying our green tomatoes in with peppers and onions for fajitas. Also, we're letting some ripen in the windowsill.
So sad to see the garden going... Just picked the last of the pole beans this afternoon. Okra's gone. Sniff...
Never mind. Just downloaded a recipe. Green tomato pie tonight!
Ann, where did you download that recipe from?

Smells great while it's cooking!
(Is this similar to yours, Phil?)
I found the recipe that you used Ann, I am with you I would like to see Phils. I don't have any green tomatoes. I think I can get a few though.

Alright, I will check for remnant tomatoes this afternoon and make some kind of a pie if I've got any.
Thanks for the recipe Phil, I wasn't sure if your laptop reached from Bermuda.
Did anyone make a pie yet? Hope they turned out well.
Green tomatoes long gone, only option was a rotten tomatoe pie, so I will wait for next year.
Yuck! Glad you passed.

I can't make the Brick tonight. If you've still got some after Thanksgiving, I would like a few.
Same here, worked late and I have to go see Mom and drop off a 20 lb turkey. There should be some left.

I thought the green tomato pie tasted a little like rhubarb pie, which I love. Since you can't always find rhubarb, this is a nice substitute.
Pecan pie's still my favorite--I always make them for holidays.
Happy decorating, guys!
Ann, how much would it cost to get a pecan pie delivered?
I don't deliver--but if you come visit, I'll make you one!

Forgot to tell you, Dale, that our son-in-law got some good shots of you dancing with The Wilders at Winfield. How many 8 x 10 glossies do you want?
8 x 10 glossies sounds a little extravagent, maybe you could just send smaller prints of a couple of the more graceful poses. Or email. I plan to do something at the Dec. show, but right now my left knee is giving me some more grief, so may not be dancing.

Sorry about your knee! Bummer!

Sorry we missed that! Maybe next year...
Glad the knee's better, Tick!
I hope that all is well out on the farm. I know you hung a couple of thousand lights and made your own eggnog. Hope to see you soon.
Hey, Dale, how about posting a new blog? I need a Tick-Fix!
I'm cogitating on several things. Something shall appear soon.
